History

AN ITALIAN HISTORY OF GREAT PROJECTS

Toto Holding is a dynamic and modern reality that draws its strength from a long experience.

More than sixty years have passed since the first road projects to the latest generation plants for the production of renewable energy, but the rigour and passion have remained unchanged over time.

To lead the way and focus on innovation is the trait d’union of the Group’s history, which maintains an Italian heart and knows how to take advantage of the best that the world market offers in terms of innovation and professionalism.

The origin of its history and the driving force behind its current organisation is Toto Costruzioni Generali, the company that builds large complex road and rail infrastructures, founded in the 1960s by the brothers Ignazio, Antonio and Carlo Toto. Toto Costruzioni Generali has established itself today as one of the general contractors in the sector of construction of large and more reliable infrastructures in Italy and abroad.

The watershed in the history of the Toto Group, the debut of a new chapter, dates back to 1995 with the creation of the company AirOne, able to break the national monopoly of scheduled flights and evolve from regional airline to main national competitor of the national airline. A success story that culminated in 2008, when AirOne joined the new Alitalia.

The Toto Group reached a further stage in its diversification process in 2001, entering, like other major world players, the motorway concessions sector through Strada dei Parchi S.p.A., of which Toto acquired full control in 2011.

In recent years, the Group has expanded the spectrum of its activities, focusing on new strategic markets, such as the renewable energy sector, in which it has operated since 2009 as an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction), with the ability to control the entire life cycle of each project. The knowledge acquired during years of design was lastly incorporated into Infraengineering, a company that provides engineering services.

Over the last ten years, the Group has successfully pursued an internationalization strategy. 2014 marks the entry into the North American renewable energy market, where Toto is active, with its subsidiary US Wind, in the construction and development of one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, off the Atlantic coast.

In Italy, through Renexia, the Group has completed and commissioned the first marine wind farm in the Mediterranean Sea and is currently developing the largest floating wind farm in the Strait of Sicily.

Much progress has been made in recent years. The Toto Group remains Italian in mind and heart but is open to new horizons and is also determined to target markets with greater opportunities for development.
