The energy of the future, produced in Italy: Renexia is accelerating toward the country’s energy independence by focusing on the development of new industrial capabilities
Strategic partnership to support decarbonization and Italy’s energy independence
Rome, June 24, 2026 – Renexia, a Toto Group company, announces the signing of a framework agreement with the Canadian company General Fusion Inc., a global leader in the development of fusion energy technology.
Renexia is not solely focused on renewables. Renexia aims to contribute to energy production for a balanced energy mix, ranging from offshore wind —now essential for large-scale clean energy generation —to cutting-edge technologies such as nuclear fusion, a strategic goal we cannot afford to miss. Fusion is the key to increasing Italy’s energy independence from sources in third countries that remain subject to fluctuations and geopolitical pressure. Fusion offers a clean, continuous, and secure source of energy, independently produced. This is why Renexia is committing to this project with its expertise and vision, which includes a supply chain designed to revive an industrial base that has all but disappeared.
The agreement with General Fusion establishes a structured, milestone-based collaboration to advance the commercial deployment of Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology in Italy through the potential development of one or more fusion power plants.
The partnership outlines several phases, ranging from site evaluation and selection to project development, commercial structuring, permitting processes, and the construction of the facilities, with the long-term goal of supporting the decarbonization of the national energy system and ensuring security of supply.
Preliminary studies and feasibility analyses can begin immediately, with the first operational phase expected to begin as early as 2026, subject to the finalization of the implementation agreements.
In this context, the initiative aligns with the broader effort launched by Italy to reassess the role of nuclear energy in the national energy mix, including through regulatory and policy initiatives aimed at fostering the development of innovative and safe technologies, in line with the country’s decarbonization and energy security objectives.
The technology developed by General Fusion represents one of the most promising approaches to making nuclear fusion energy a sustainable and competitive energy source, capable of meeting the growing demand for electricity and contributing to the global energy transition.
“With this agreement,” said Riccardo Toto, General Manager of Renexia, “we are strengthening a long-standing partnership and taking a concrete step toward introducing cutting-edge energy technology in Italy. Fusion represents an extraordinary opportunity to complement the energy mix of the future with a clean, safe, and potentially competitive source. Offshore wind power is essential today. Fusion energy is essential for tomorrow. At Renexia, we intend to actively contribute to the industrial development of these solutions by leveraging our expertise, design capabilities, and dialogue with local communities and institutions. We are working to help build an energy-independent Italy with a robust industrial base that creates jobs and ensures stability in energy supplies.”
