MONTENEGRO: RENEXIA AND SISTEM-MNE SIGN A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING FOR OVER 1 GW OF NEW RENEWABLE CAPACITY

An investment of 1.2 billion euros for an annual generation capacity of 2.3 TWh once fully operational. The project strengthens energy cooperation between Italy and Montenegro and contributes to the integration of the European electricity market.

Rome, 21 October 2026 – Renexia and Sistem-MNE d.o.o., a Montenegrin company active in the development of energy projects, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of a broad portfolio of initiatives in the renewable energy sector in Montenegro. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the “AIM 2026 Montenegro Investment Conference” in Portonovi, an event dedicated to promoting strategic investment and the country’s sustainable development.

The agreement represents a further step in the energy collaboration between Italy and Montenegro and forms part of the broader European strategy aimed at strengthening energy security, decarbonisation and the integration of continental electricity grids.

The Memorandum provides for investments of approximately €1.2 billion to develop wind and solar power plants with a total capacity exceeding 1 GW, capable of generating, once fully operational, around 2.3 TWh of electricity per year – equivalent to the consumption of approximately 850,000 households – and resulting in an estimated reduction of around 497,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

The initiative is also of strategic importance from an infrastructure perspective. The growing availability of renewable energy generated on the eastern shore of the Adriatic will, in fact, help to strengthen the energy interconnection between Italy and Montenegro, enhancing the role of the existing subsea power link and supporting the prospects for its hoped-for upgrade. In this context, the project represents a concrete contribution to the development of an increasingly integrated, resilient and competitive European electricity market.

The construction of the plants, expected to take around four years, could create up to 1,000 jobs across the industrial supply chain, drawing on both Italian and Montenegrin skills and expertise.

The agreement builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Renexia with the Government of Montenegro in April 2026 to promote cooperation in the field of renewable energy and support the development of new industrial investments in the wind and solar power sectors.

“Energy cooperation between Italy and Montenegro represents a strategic opportunity not only for our two countries, but for the whole of Europe,” said Riccardo Toto, Managing Director of Renexia. “Through this agreement with Sistem-MNE, we are strengthening an industrial strategy focused on clean energy production, security of supply and the growing integration of European energy infrastructure. The development of renewable energy sources on both sides of the Adriatic and the gradual strengthening of cross-border electricity interconnections are essential elements in supporting the continent’s energy transition and consolidating the role of the Adriatic region as a strategic platform for the energy of the future.”
